Awh, I really wish I did HMUN… I was interested at first…but when my friend and I went to Mr Sullivan on the day we thought they were having their first meeting…(they changed the date again…), he said that we’d be great contenders because we both love history and we’re not going to go off partying in Boston.
LOL. The “love history” part turned me off a lot and I never bothered to go back… :(
YOU SHOULD HAVE. if your friends do it too then it has the potential to be the most fun 2 day trip of high school cause unlike w/ band, you can pretty much do whatever/whenever you want. You dont even have to “love history” to do it. That just means that he thinks highly of you= you get in. you still have next year though.
This year it’s actually four days. They left yesterday and they’re coming back on Sunday.
Ughh I wanna do it next year! I can’t put it on college apps though =P But eeee. What exactlyyy do you do? I’ve heard of these committees and researching your stand on some random topic…but I don’t get what you actualllly do
Oh right. I forgot that we left on a thursday.
Basically everyone is assigned to a committee usually with 2 people from each school. Each school represents a different country, so it’s like they’re sending delegates to each committee. each one is different. Some focus on economic, or environmental, or sanctions… and other different stuff. but the general format is that the overseers present a topic or an issue and the delegates debate and come up with solutions. and it all happens like it would at the UN. Some are big comittees with 200 people, others only have 30 or so. and they meet twice a day for however many hours.
My two years i was on special comittees, so once i was dealing with the state of the world after WW1 and had to basically recreate the league of nations. The other year i was dealing with Japan in the year 2016. and we just basically made the whole thing up cause it was in the future.the special comittees are smaller and you have more chances to participate, and people are more involved.
the year we did japan we had a “crisis” so they came to our hotel at midnight to take us to committee, because north korea had just “launched nuclear missiles”
the reaserch comes in to play before hand, because you do want to know a little bit about your topic, so you can offer realistic solutions to whatever the issue is(you find out part of the issue before hand) and so you can represent your country’s real life interests, but even if you dont its not the end of the world, because you can still just give random suggestions.
but when you’re not in committe you can basically go anywhere you want in boston.
And ususally on the saturday, we visit harvard and that part of boston.
